Awards Associated With Distinction 

These monetary awards are conferred only once a year, at a biological sciences Awards Reception prior to May commencement. Distinction papers of students who graduate in August or December are considered for these awards the following May.

 


Helen E. Hess Award
The Helen Hess Award ($300) is presented to the graduating senior in Biology General or Biology Honors whose research report presented for graduation with distinction has been judged by the Biology Distinction Committee to be of the highest merit in terms of both its research contribution and its written presentation. First presented in 1992, this award was established to recognize the service and commitment to the Biologi cal Sciences undergraduate advising program of Helen E. Hess, Assistant Director for Academic Affairs, 1969-91.

Harriett Long Award
The Harriett Long Award ($300) is presented to the graduating senior in the Life Sciences major whose academic record is determined by the Biology Distinction Committee to be the most outstanding. The recipient must have completed the Biology 110-111 sequence or the Biology 120-121-122 sequence as part of his/her degree requirements. First presented in 1982, the award was established in memory of Harriett Long, who for many years coordinated the laboratories for Biology 110 and 111, and did her utmost to support the many students with whom she came in contact.

Life Sciences Distinction Awards
Students from all options in the Life Sciences major are eligible for two Life Sciences Distinction Awards ($400 each). These awards are presented to two graduating seniors whose research papers and academic records are judged by the Biology Distinction Committee to represent "achieved excellence in the pursuit of knowledge."
