Job Title: Research Specialist, University of North Carolina

Description:
The Biology Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is searching for a Research Specialist. The primary duties of this position are: 1) to prepare materials for undergraduate biology laboratories and 2) maintain biological specimens located in the university's greenhouses. The first duty includes preparation for the teaching laboratories in botany and ecology. The research specialist works with instructors to design, evaluate ecology and set up plant labs and helps modify equipment and methods based on instructional initiatives. The second duty involves providing primary care for the Department's plants that are used in its research and teaching labs. This duty includes a) responding to changes in the environmental conditions in the greenhouses and growth chambers, b) providing pest and disease treatments, c) meeting plants' nutritional needs, and d) assuring that the appropriate water, temperature, light, and humidity requirements of the plants are met on a daily basis.

Requirements:
Graduation from a four-year college and good communication and organizational skills are required. Obtaining a North Carolina pesticide application license will be required within 30 days of hiring. The following are preferred: 1) MS degree in botany, plant sciences, horticulture or plant ecology. 2) Experience in maintaining greenhouses, plant materials, and growth chambers. 3) Experience in pesticide use and regulations and nutrient application in greenhouses. 4) Experience in managing college level laboratory courses. 5) Experience in maintaining laboratory equipment and ordering and maintaining biological and chemical inventories. 6) Knowledge of plant physiology and its application to plant cultivation and biotechnology.
Position hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, however it is possible some evening and weekend hours will be required depending upon changing circumstances and departmental needs.
Salary commensurate with experience (Range = $33,650 - $40,330).

Job Title: Manager, BOTANICAL GARDEN/GREENHOUSE (63270) P&A-4
Biology, Central Michigan University

Responsible for overseeing a 4-5 acre botanical garden and a 6-room greenhouse for teaching and research with surrounding rock gardens. Day to day management and maintenance of the gardens, greenhouse, and rock gardens in excellent horticultural and aesthetic condition. Provide oversight, in cooperation with facilities management and the department chair, of all areas of garden installation as currently planned. Work together with faculty to develop plant collections and prepare materials for plant sciences classes including laboratory set-up and course preparation for the general botany course. Develop a vision for and coordination of outreach activities and public programs. Teaches one class per year dealing with horticulture, greenhouse care, etc.

Required qualifications include master's degree preferably in applied plant science, botany or horticulture or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five years of progressively increasing management experience with botanical gardens, greenhouses, or related organizations. Ability to interact with horticultural and general contractors as the gardens are constructed. Ability to identify plant species and have working knowledge of plant nomenclature, labeling, accessioning and record keeping. Basic understanding of equipment and tools, including their care and maintenance. Willingness to work outdoors in all weather, either alone or as part of a team. Ability to manage priorities and create strong relations with other departments. Basic computing skills. Excellent communication skills including interpersonal, verbal, written and listening. Ability to present a positive public image. Ability to work well with others including students, staff, faculty and administrators. Must have license to handle pesticides or obtain one within six months of hiring. Must be able to perform all aspects of the position. Desired qualifications include Ph.D. preferably in an area of applied plant science, horticulture or extensive experience in preferred. A passion for horticulture, nature, and service the clientele of the gardens and greenhouse. Previous experience managing botanical gardens and/or greenhouses. Experience relating to the public including donors, volunteers and vendors. Experience managing volunteers. Established network of professional colleagues within the horticultural community.

Wage rate: Salary commensurate with qualifications. Hours: Primarily Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm; some evenings/weekends as necessary. Job Title: Research Specialist in Life Sciences (Greenhouse), University of Illinois

The Department of Plant Biology/School of Integrative Biology is searching for a full time Research Specialist in Life Sciences (Greenhouse) to oversee plant material for classes, research experiments, and maintain a large exotic plant collection in the Plant Biology Greenhouses for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Other responsibilities include: Develop, implement and supervise the daily plant care for educational projects, research projects and plant collections. Develop planting schedules for Integrative Biology Classes per requests given by the class instructor and outreach and educational-related activities in the form of educational tours and workshops. Interact with faculty, class instructors, staff and students. Some work on weekends and holidays is required, as well as respond to greenhouse environmental alarms when other staff is unavailable. Train and supervise part-time student and hourly employees. May require on or off campus travel to deliver/purchase plants and supplies.

Qualifications: Required: B.S. degree in Horticulture, Plant Biology (Botany), Crop Sciences or related field. Experience with use of computers for word processing, spreadsheet and database software management. Preferred: M.S. degree, with a minimum of three years experience in greenhouse, field, or nursery production. Experience in a research and/or educational greenhouse. Must be knowledgeable of greenhouse research or commercial production methods for horticultural, agronomic crops, and exotic plants. Must also be knowledgeable in plant nutrition, plant propagation, plant taxonomy, scientific nomenclature and botanical terminology. Knowledge of where plants grow and how they grow is required as there is a large exotic plant collection with plants from all over the world. Knowledge of the fundamentals of plant pathology and entomology, as well as experimental layout and design is also required. Must be able to identify greenhouse pests and disease symptoms, and be able to make independent decisions for appropriate Integrative Pest Management methods, including mechanical, chemical and biological control. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Illinois Pesticide Public Applicators or Operators License is required. A driver's license is required.
Salary: Will be determined by experience and qualifications.

 Job Title: SENIOR LABORATORY ASSOCIATE, POMONA COLLEGE

The Biology Department at Pomona College seeks a highly motivated individual with broad training in biology, and expertise in ecology and the plant sciences. The two primary responsibilities will be 1.) To prepare for laboratories and field work in an introductory course with an emphasis on ecology and evolution, place orders and acquire materials for this course, and assist in teaching the laboratory, and 2.) To maintain the departmental plant-growing facilities, including greenhouses and growth chambers, and be responsible for growing plants for class use and for research. The senior lab associate may also assist in the preparation of laboratories for some appropriate upper-division biology courses, as time permits. He/she will supervise student assistants in greenhouse work and in preparation and cleanup for the introductory course labs.

 Job Title:AGRICULTURAL SPECIALIST II - GREENHOUSE MANAGER
Iowa State University Department of Horticulture

Direct the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and rental of the Department of Horticulture plant-care facilities including 19 horticulture greenhouses, 18 plant-growth chambers, and 8 walk-in coolers. This also includes pesticide application, departmental training to satisfy EPA mandates, scheduling rentals, collecting rent, keeping records, hiring and scheduling student employees. The coordinator prepares and plans the budget and coordinates the activities of facility users and staff. Continuing education and professional development are essential to enable the incumbent to stay abreast of current trends and technology in the field.

Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or related plant science and one year of experience that demonstrates knowledge such as plant pathology, entomology, and greenhouse operation and management to understand plant insect pests, diseases, and their control. Must have a working knowledge of computers and applications such as Microsoft Office Suite programs, specifically Word and Excel. An equivalent combination of related experience and education totalling 5 years may be substituted when these are at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.

Master of Science in Horticulture or related plant science. Minimum $33,255; commensurate with qualifications

Successful candidate must obtain and maintain a current Commercial Pesticide Applicator's Certification within 60 days of employment for greenhouse pest control (category 3G), and research and demonstration pest control (category 10). Successful candidate must also pass an annual medical examination at Occupational Medicine within 60 days of employment in order to use a respirator, which is required when appyling pesticides.

Job Title: Greenhouse and Nursery Manager
Description:
The Greenhouse and Nursery Manager is responsible for propagation and growing of plants for the living collections of the Arnold Arboretum. Plants are also produced for research, plant introduction programs, and the Annual Plant Sale. This position oversees a 7-day, 24-hour operation that carries responsibility for off-schedule and emergency coverage. Occasional weekend and holiday hours are required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Supervises all greenhouse personnel and volunteers and manages greenhouse and nursery operations involved with accessioning, growing, and distributing plants.
2) Supervises the development and maintenance of growing areas within the Dana Greenhouse complex, including the east, west and south nurseries, the shade nursery, the four propagation greenhouses, the cold storage building, the bonsai collection, and the display beds within the greenhouse area.
3) Is responsible for the development and management of the overall budget of the Dana Greenhouse complex, including supplies, equipment, plant material, and physical facilities.
4) Participates as an active team member in day-to-day tasks and operations as needed.
5) Participates as key member of the Arboretum horticulture management team
6) Oversees distribution of plants and propagules to outside scientists, professional horticulturists, and commercial nurseries.
7) Works with the Curator to implement annual plant acquisitions plan, including collecting trips, Index Seminum and other acquisition activities.
8) Coordinates the Arboretum's involvement with the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC), in close cooperation with the curatorial associate for plant records.
9) Teaches classes to the interns and to participants in the Arboretum's education programs.
10) Publishes articles in Arnold Arboretum publications and in professional and/or research journals.
11) Maintains current knowledge in propagation and related fields through participation in IPPS and other relevant organizations.
12) Provides management advice to greenhouse and growth chamber operations at the Weld Hill research facility currently under construction.
13) Works closely with the membership department on the special plant distributions to members and on the Annual Plant Sale.
14) As appropriate to time and interests, conducts and publishes propagation studies and related plant science research.

Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree, in biology, plant science or a related field.. Minimum of three years experience working in greenhouse and nursery management, and in supervising staff. Extensive knowledge of hardy woody plants and propagation methods. Experience in integrated pest management for greenhouses and growing operations.

Additional Requirements:
Masters degree preferred. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Interest in propagation and related plant science research. Must maintain a Massachusetts Private Pesticide License. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and D.O.T. Medical Examiner's Certificate. Willingness and ability to teach arboretum classes and write for professional and/or research publications. Botanic garden experience highly desirable. Ability to lift 50 lbs. and to work outdoors in year-round conditions.
