The annual Agonopterix alstroemeriana survey. Each Spring, our lab group ventures into the wilds of central Illinois (roadsides, railroad tracts, garbage dumps) to census this little moth that came here on a prolonged vacation from europe. This is one of the few insects that can eat poison hemlock (Conium maculatum), which also came from Europe and which has become and significant noxious weed in North America. In parts of the U.S. (northwest), this insect is used to control poison hemlock, but in central Illinois, where the insect has appeared only in the last decade, it is still far from being common enough to control the plant.
