Discussion and Lab Sections will MEET IN the Plant Sciences Conservatory on Dorner Drive November 12-14.

Enter the building through the main entrance in the brick building from Dorner Drive. Turn left in the entryway, procede through the double doors, then turn right, make a left turn at the end of the hall and enter the conservatory through the door to your left.

Learner Objectives

You should be able to:

  1. Enjoy the small sample of biodiversity available to you in the greenhouse in the context of a scavenger hunt game. The main idea is to have a good time and learn some interesting things in the process.

  2. Observe a plant and develop a hypothesis about its native environment based on its vegetative characteristics.

  3. Analyze plant defensive mechanisms (spines, thorns, essential oils, etc.)

  4. Observe flowers and develop hypotheses on the means of pollination.

  5. Observe and analyze the development of fruits from flowers.

  6. Compare and contrast the methods used in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) with those used in conventional pest control. Evolution of pesticide resistance.

  7. Observe plants from a variety of divisions (flowering plants, cycads, conifers, ferns, horsetails, club mosses and bryophytes) and look for their means of reproduction.

  8. Observe insectivorous plants and explain their need for an insect diet.
