Completion of this assignment should help you achieve the expectations of the learner objectives of Lecture 11, Heredity and Meiosis and Lecture 13 Genes, Traits, and Proteins.

Assignment:

  • Write a human genetics problem for a real inherited disorder.

  • The link to the left is a good starting point. In Addition, you may use diseases listed in the lecture outlines or do your own research on a disease that interests you.

  • Take-Home Assignment #5 can give you some inspiration concerning the patterns for writing genetics problems.

  • The problem need only involve one trait, but you may include two or more if you want a challenge.

  • The genetic disorder may be autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, sex-linked, aneuploidy, whatever you wish, just be sure to indicate what category it fits.

  • Tell us what chromosome the gene locus is on and describe the function of the protein the gene normally codes for.

  • Describe how the mutant protein is invoved in the development of symptoms of people affected by the genetic disorder.

  • You may start with information about the parents and ask about the probability a child will have the disorder, or be healthy, or be a carrier, etc.

  • You may start with information about the children and ask about the genotypes and phenotypes of the parents.

  • Write the solution to your problem as well as the problem itself.

  • Post your problem and solution to the appropriate forum in your discussion or lab instructor's section of Moodle well in advance of the due date.

  • Include working links to the web pages you used in your research for the genetics problem asignment.

  • You NEED NOT comment to anyone for the grade on the assignment, but feel free to look over the other questions and comment if you find something interesting or if you find a problem with a question.

  • Here is the grading guideline we will use.

    • Description of the disease - 3 Points ____

    • Web link to research reference - 1 Point____

    • Set up of genetics problem - 4 Points ____

    • Solution of the problem - 4 Points ____

    • Total ____ / 12 points

  • Check back and answer any questions left for you by your instructor or other students. You can boost your grade on this assignment if you correct mistakes or post clarifications in response to questions. Corrections or comments should be posted as "Replies" to the original message so they stay linked together.

Some of the assignments may be similar to specific Extra Credit Projects, HOWEVER, YOU MAY NOT use your Moodle assignments for Extra Credit. That would be called "double-dipping" which would be an infringement of academic integrity.
