About Biochemistry 460:
In Senior Seminar: Scientific Communication,
students will learn how to write a journal article and a minireview while
exploring topics in biochemistry and ethics. Students will read popular magazine articles,
trade magazine articles, academic review articles and scientific journal
articles that will nucleate discussions of research and
publication ethics, genre, and audience. Students
will learn efficient strategies for searching and studying the biomedical
literature. Students will make an oral presentation of a journal article
to the class. Because this is a seminar course, students are expected to
actively participate in class discussions.
This class meets
campus general education guidelines for advanced composition.
Specifically, advanced composition requires "writing assignments that (a)
demand analysis and synthesis of the subject matter of the course; (b) require substantial original
composition (typically totaling at least 20 to 30 pages over the course of a
semester); and (c) involve multiple drafts throughout the course of the
semester. A substantial portion of the overall course grade should be
based upon evaluation of the quality of written assignments." Because this
seminar course reflects the reality of current scientific communication, a
substantial portion of the overall course grade will be based upon
participation in peer review and group discussion.
Writing Assignments:
All written assignments must
be deposited in the electronic drop box. In addition, two (2) hard
copies of all written assignments must be submitted in class on the due date.

your name, the date, and the word count. The hard copies will be graded,
and the electronic copies will excerpted for use in class exercises in
revising and editing.
Participation:
All students are expected to participate
in class discussions and peer evaluations.
