My research focuses on a better experimental and theoretical understanding of the dynamics of complex molecular systems. Three important sources of complexity are large molecular size, interaction with the environment, and high internal energy. Our experimental work on the earliest backbone kinetics during protein folding emphasizes the first two aspects; our computational studies of vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) and our experimental work in energy and time-resolved spectroscopies of highly vibrationally excited molecules emphasize the latter two aspects; finally, studies of energy transfer, switching, and laser-assisted desorption of atoms and molecules on surfaces combines all three aspects as part of an interdisciplinary research team at the Beckman Institute.
