Extreme dining a rousing success!

Wooller masterminds masterful event...

Safety is always the #1 issue at CCRE
The Smithsonian Institution has operated research sites around the world for more than 100 years, always highly concerned about safety. Carrie Bow has long been at the forefront of safety training. Each new group of scientists receives a thorough briefing before using boats, and any travel outside the immediate area must be approved by Mike Carpenter, and often, accompanied by the station manager.
Diving, of course, as one of the most dangerous activities, is highly controlled for the safety of all involved, including those non-divers, simply on-station at the time, who would also be traumatized by any accident.
So, no one was surprised recently when Martha Nichols (right) was elevated to Chief of Housekeeping and Safety, or when she immediately implemented a new program of training for station personnel in the proper use of equipment on the island.
As you prepare for your next research trip, check your packing list one more time. Make sure that you have everything you need for safety and emergency, and be prepared to go over it with Chief Nichols when you arrive.
Housekeeping and Safety jefe Martha Nichols supervises Station Manager, Dan Miller as he prepares to qualify for independent use of washboard and brush. With notebook in hand, she notes that he is properly dressed for activities around water and in the sun, that he is taking proper precautions for back safety, and that washboard, brush and shirt are properly and safely handled for at all times.

In the last issue, way back in January of this year, readers were invited to dinner in the middle of the ocean by Matt Wooller. This is a follow-up report on the dinner itself, which was held on February 21st at 3 in the afternoon.

The dinner was hosted by Dr. Wooller and Dr. Fogel, and was held approximately 6.28 km southwest of Carrie Bow Cay. Transportation was provided by the Miller Transport Co, and catering was by Reef Edge Caterers. The venue was provided by local pelicans who graciously gave up their roosting site for the afternoon.
Guests included Dr, Myrna Jacobson, Professor John Cheeseman, Dr. Jay Burns, Mr. Daniel Miller and Ms. Claudette Decourley, Ms. Martha Nichols, and Ms. Greta Myerchin.
Music was provided by the Matthew Wooller gramophon, and couples were eager to dance (though the floor would, unfortunately, accommodate only one couple at a time). The menu for the evening included appetizers with white wine, a main course of barbecued chicken with green salad accompaniment and a choice of wines.
Martha’s famous lime pie was the featured dessert, with port to follow.
The evening was brought to a fitting close with the traditional ceremonial toss of the conch shells, over the left shoulder for good luck. A good time was, indeed, had by all.

Other Stuff -
Invasive Exotics hit Twin Cays
It is probably every field biologist’s worst nightmare to dream that he or she has been responsible for introduction of an exotic species to a pristine ecosystem, and that it has resulted in massive change, even destruction of the place s/he loves...
Jack Slater - the biography. As you all know, Jack Slater has been a leading figure in Tangled Roots discussion and planning sessions for all the time we have been in this collaboratory business. But just who is he? In this issue, we begin a series of articles telling you just that.
Did we miss a treatment? Are we studying, or killing, Twin Cays?
Based on the results of Candy Feller’s dissertation research, the current round of fertilization treatments includes controls, N and P fertilized trees. But what happened to the N+P treatment? Are we missing an interaction?
Have you noticed? - My big discovery on a recent visit to TC was at the weather station. Have you ever noticed that the Batophora colonizes the stumps of the old Avicennia forest, and follows outward all along the root systems? Is this just a holdfast, or is there some other functional relationship? Enquiring minds want to know, so if you have ideas, don’t hesitate to let us know.
Pauline to receive promotion at Pelican Beach - Rumors at Carrie Bow and Pelican Beach Resort appear to be true… Pauline, the supremely competent facilitator of all our nefarious and diverse arrangements, will be leaving her current job to take a position in marketing.
As Alice Bowman told me, “It is important for good people to be able to grow and advance.” There is no question about how good Pauline has been, or about how much it has meant to us all. When you pass through Dangriga again, join me in congratulating her. We wish her well and will miss her immensely.

Apochrypha has been eliminated on the grounds that it seemed redundant. The travel schedule has been eliminated because no one would ever tell me where or when they were going.
