In general, postdoctoral associates are expected to provide their own salary support via fellowships. Temporary funds are sometimes available via local training and research grants.
There are small differences in the coursework associated with the three routes, but all programs lead to the same research opportunities. All PhD students are provided a full stipend throughout their program of study.
We usually have a couple of undergrads involved in research in the lab during most semesters. Some students perform hourly labor, and some eventually develop research projects that provide academic credit for independent study. The bad news is that we get MANY more requests from well-qualified applicants than we are able to grant. Getting a spot in our lab is partly a matter of luck and timing. If you are interested, please send an email to dclayton@uiuc.edu. Your email will be kept on file, and the files are reviewed whenever an opening emerges. In general, we prefer to start students early (freshman or sophomore), with the expectation that the student will continue in the lab for 2 or more years.
