Undergraduate Research

Effective fall 2001, students interested in animal biology, ecology or evolution enter a Biological Sciences curriculum: either 3204 (biological sciences--undecided premedicine) or 3209 (biological sciences--undecided non-premedicine). Freshmen take two lecture-only, one-semester introductory courses that expose them to and provide the foundation for advanced work in each major. After completing the two introductory courses (IB 150 and MCB 150), students elect the Integrative Biology major and then take intermediate courses (IB 201, IB 202, IB 203), with laboratories, that will build upon each other in an efficient (non-repetitive) and thorough manner. Following successful completion of the intermediate work, students take advanced courses that will rigorously enable them to develop their interests and training in the discipline.

For additional details, see the Integrative Biology major

We encourage undergraduates to enrich their academic experience with a research experience (IB 390 or IB 490).  A number of our faculty offer opportunities for research projects in their labs.

To be eligible for distinction a student must graduate with a grade-point average of at least 3.0, and submit a report of an independent study project (IB 490) one month prior to graduation for approval by the Integrative Biology Distinction Committee. Additional details on requirements, procedures and deadlines.

For general information about the undergraduate programs in life sciences at the University of Illinois, see the Biological Sciences Academic Advising and Career Placement Office.  Advisers are available to help students plan their program of study.
