The bright orange, showy parts of Indian paintbrush, Castilleja coccinea, are actually bracts (modified leaves), with a flower inside each bract. NOTE: Many members of the Scrophulariaceae are photosynthetic root parasites (hemiparasites), such as Indian paintbrush.
