Solanaceae

27-Datura stramonium

[FMP-field: image]

Strictly applied, the genus Datura includes only annual herbaceous plants. A common weed in pigpens is Datura stramonium, Jimpson weed, a native of Asia now found commonly in Illinois and elsewhere. The leaves, roots, and seeds contain several powerful alkaloids and are poisonous, hallucinogenic, and/or medicinal. The leaves have a strong disagreeable odor, and pigs learn very rapidly to avoid eating this plant. Note: This is NOT Dr. Robertson's pet pig, Ruby, that he had when he was a boy.
