Financial & In-Kind Service Opportunities for the BOAST AcademyScholarships for 5 to 10 at-risk Kenwood children to attend the BOAST AcademyThe BOAST Academy selects participants through Kenwood faculty referrals, regardless of a family's ability to pay. On average, 10% of referred families are able to pay the daily fee, and 50% qualify for state-subsidized childcare, but many can neither afford the daily fee nor qualify for a state subsidy.
Sponsors for educational field tripsEducational field trips to museums, nature parks, other places of interest, and special classes broaden the horizons of at-risk children. Financial assistance is needed to cover transportation costs and admission fees.
Sponsors for hourly staffAdults from the community would provide valuable perspectives and role models for UIUC undergraduates who work at BOAST, as well as for Academy participants.
Sponsors for program evaluationThe BOAST staff uses a variety of instruments to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. However we would like to take advantage of Mr. Culver's offer to make student records available as part of the BOAST Academy assessment process. In addition, an objective program evaluation with pre- and post-tests requires an independent consultant.
Sponsors for staff presentationsBOAST staff members are invited to make presentations at educational conferences (e.g., Illinois and National Science Teachers Associations, Service learning conference) about the Academy and/or the hands-on science lessons BOAST develops, but no funds are available to send staff to such events.
Sponsors for BOAST Poster SessionAs part of the BOAST Academy activities each spring, every participant studies a science topic, makes a poster about it, and presents his/her poster at the BOAST Family Poster Session and/or Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellows Poster Session at UIUC.
The BOAST Academy is also seeking in-kind or financial support for the following areas:
