Financial & In-Kind Service Opportunities for the BOAST Academy

Scholarships for 5 to 10 at-risk Kenwood children to attend the BOAST Academy

The BOAST Academy selects participants through Kenwood faculty referrals, regardless of a family's ability to pay. On average, 10% of referred families are able to pay the daily fee, and 50% qualify for state-subsidized childcare, but many can neither afford the daily fee nor qualify for a state subsidy.

  • $2,200 per child per year
  • $225 per child per month
  • $11.75 per child per day
Sponsors for educational field trips

Educational field trips to museums, nature parks, other places of interest, and special classes broaden the horizons of at-risk children. Financial assistance is needed to cover transportation costs and admission fees.

  • $1,000 per year:
    • 10 trips per year for 20 BOAST participants @ $5 per child per trip
    • $100 per trip
Sponsors for hourly staff

Adults from the community would provide valuable perspectives and role models for UIUC undergraduates who work at BOAST, as well as for Academy participants.

  • $3,900-$4,700 per year
  • ($7.50 per hour for 10–12 hours a week for 52 weeks)
Sponsors for program evaluation

The BOAST staff uses a variety of instruments to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. However we would like to take advantage of Mr. Culver's offer to make student records available as part of the BOAST Academy assessment process. In addition, an objective program evaluation with pre- and post-tests requires an independent consultant.

  • $1,500 per year: access student records per Mr. Culver's recommendation
  • $3000-$5000 per year: Independent evaluation consultant
Sponsors for staff presentations

BOAST staff members are invited to make presentations at educational conferences (e.g., Illinois and National Science Teachers Associations, Service learning conference) about the Academy and/or the hands-on science lessons BOAST develops, but no funds are available to send staff to such events.

  • $200–$1,000 per conference
Sponsors for BOAST Poster Session

As part of the BOAST Academy activities each spring, every participant studies a science topic, makes a poster about it, and presents his/her poster at the BOAST Family Poster Session and/or Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellows Poster Session at UIUC.

  • $30 per student for reference books, poster board, and educational materials related to his/her science topic.

The BOAST Academy is also seeking in-kind or financial support for the following areas:

Copying services

$1000 a year

Copying services are needed for the daily educational activities, parent handbook, flyers, and other publications.

School supplies

$20 per child per year

The Academy purchases school supplies for BOAST children whose families cannot afford them. These supplies are used in the classroom and at BOAST.

Educational books and materials

$500 a year

$50 a month

Hands-on science, math, language arts, and social studies lessons are part of the weekly activities of the BOAST Academy . Books and other reference materials, as well as a variety of supplies, are needed to implement these lessons.

Cell phone services

$30-$40 a month

BOAST has a cell phone, which is necessary for communication between BOAST staff and the children's parents, as well as for emergency situations (e.g., illness or accident).

The BOAST Academy will provide various levels of recognition for its supporters:
