Field Trip to Meadowbrook Park

The Field Trip

by Ellen

Meadowbrook Prairie is a restored prairie in Urbana Illinois. For this event, the prairie was used as the "setting" for a "pioneer journey to a new home." During the "journey" participants stopped at several locations to study the plants and animals, and describe the area. In addition participants discussed ways to build houses and secure life's necessities in this "new" land.

The participants were very observant during this trip! They observed a variety of plants, animals and insects. They engaged in discussions about where the animals and insects might live and what the animals and insects might eat. The participants also made sketches of the houses they might have lived in during pioneer days. Read more about the trip from the children's perspective!

The Prairie

by Chavez (Grade 1)
(As told to Ellen)

We went to go see flowers and animals at the prairie.

I would build my house in an open space so I could plant corn and squash. I would pick a place near a lake so I could have water near my house. I would scoop water into my bucket at the lake and then I would carry the bucket of water to my house. I would cut a tree down to make some furniture.

On our first stop, we saw dragonflies, trees and berries. We felt the ground and it was cold. We heard crickets. It smelled like flowers and mud.

On the second stop, we saw a rabbit hopping across the trail and going into the grass. We touched the ground and it felt warm because it was not in the shade.

On the trip, we learned that people should not hurt the creatures that live on the prairie.

The Prairie Trip

by Laycell (Grade 3)

We went to Meadowbrook Park to see how pioneers lived a long time ago. We saw prairie plants and animals there.

I built my house by the flowers. I built my own well too. I built it there because I need food that comes from plants and I need water.

I saw flowers and trees on the first stop of our journey.

I saw a prairie dog hole on the second stop. I saw a caterpillar too. I saw some Goldenrod on the second stop too.

I learned that the male crickets rub their wings together to make the sound we heard on the prairie.

The Prairie

by Gabriel (Grade 3)

We went to Meadowbrook Park on Monday. We went to Meadowbrook Park to see how settlers built houses in the past. We also saw prairie plants and prairie dog holes.

I built my house by the well. I built my own well too so I could be quick to get my water. I also chose a place to build my house where I could hunt deer.

On the first stop, I saw trees, poison ivy, white flowers, berries, grass and birds.

On the second stop, I saw white flowers and Big Blue Stem.

On the trip, I learned that crickets make noise with their wings and that rabbits push their legs up to hop.

The Prairie Trip

by Quintrell (Grade 3)

We went to the prairie at Meadowbrook Park. We wanted to see what we could learn about the prairie. We wanted to imagine how pioneers lived on the prairie.

I built my house by the river for my family. I built my house by the river to catch fish and to go hunting for deer. I built my own fishing pole to go fishing. (See the drawing I made of the landscape around my house.)

We saw birds, flowers, trees and grass at our first stop.

We all saw prairie dog holes at our second stop. We also saw Big Blue Stem and Indian Grass.

We learned about the prairie dog on our trip. We learned that he makes his hole in the ground. We learned about crickets too. They click their wings to make noise. We learned about how rabbits hop on the ground. They push their legs up to hop and they go fast!

The Prairie

by Shanea (Grade 5)

We went to the prairie to learn about the plants and pioneers.

I would build my house by trees so I could make furniture. I would build my house by a stream so I could get water. I would use the wood from the trees to build a fire, to heat my house, to light-up my house and to cook my food.(See the drawing I made of the landscape around my house.)

On my journey, I saw flowers, trees, berries and animals.

On the trip, I learned not to kill the plants and bugs. I also learned about how pioneers built houses a long time ago.

The Prairie

by Maria (Grade 5)

We went to the priaire. We went there to learn about the weeds and plants that live on the prairie.

I built my house near lots of trees so that I could use the wood to build my house, build a fire for heating up my food and keep my house warm, and make lots of furniture. I also built my house by a river so that I would be able to get a lot of water.

At my first stop, I saw lots of weeds, trees, plants, golden rod, and tall grass over 6 feet tall.

At my second stop, I saw a bird's nest with an egg in it, and berries.

I saw many things at the prairie like snake holes, prairie dog holes, and deer foot prints.

On the Prairie

by Katrice (Grade 4)

We went to Meadowbrook Prairie to look around and to learn about the pioneers who lived there before.

I built my house in the shade of the trees because then the sun would not shine in and make the house too hot.

On the first stop, I saw trees and flowers. I heard crickets and birds.

On the second stop, I saw tall grass. The animals I saw were birds and crickets.

On the trip, I learned that pioneers lived there and a lot of animals lived there too.

The Prairie

by James (Grade 2)
(As told to Bobbi)

We went with Ellen to the prairie. We went there to learn about plants and animals that live on the prairie.

I would build my house by trees so I could get logs to build my cabin and furniture. I would get my water from a creek. I'd get a bucket of water and bring it back to the house to wash my clothes, and I would build a fire so I could boil it to cook in. I would save the rain water off the roof to water my plants or take a bath.

Ellen showed us a place where people messed the prairie up by riding their bikes on it. We went over a bridge over a ditch. Sometime in the past, the ditch had water in it. Then it would have been a creek. It hadn't been raining there in a long time.

A Trip To The Prairie

by Gary (Grade 2)

The Prairie

by Kenneth (Grade 3)

We went to Meadowbrook Park to see how pioneers lived a long time ago. We saw plants and animals there too.

On the first stop, I saw Big Blue Stem and caterpillars.

On the second stop, I saw Goldenrod and some prairie dog holes.

We learned about crickets. We learned that they put their wings together to make noise.
