The Illinois Learning
Standards state that science, at its best, provides knowledge and skills that
improve the understanding of virtually all subjects. As Program
Manager of Prairie Flowers, a middle school science teacher outreach program
supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the University of Illinois,
and the Illinois State Board of Education, I have the opportunity to work with
over 100 science teachers in the East central Illinois region. This allows me to view firsthand how school
districts are handling implementing the Illinois Learning Standards and using
educational strategies in the classroom.
Content skill development and technology integration are a fundamental
component of the summer workshops offered to our participants. Working
directly with teachers serves as a reminder of just how exciting it can be to
teach. I would like to bring my
experience and skills to Prairie Flowers to help participants fulfill their
goals and aspirations for the being highly qualified science teachers.
