Eastern subterranean termite (Reticulitermes
flavipes)
The caste system of the termite includes large soldiers with big
mandibles, medium-sized workers with smaller jaws and tiny white
immature forms.
Availability: These need to be
ordered and will be available after spring break. This species of
termite can be a huge pest in old houses with rotten wood.
Because of this, you will receive colonies of workers with the queen
removed, so if they do escape, they cannot become established.
Housing: Place termites in a
plastic or glass container with layers of moist cardboard or paper
towels. Cover the container and keep it in a dark, moist place at
50 to 60 degrees F. Control of moisture is critical. A dry
culture will soon die. A water-saturated culture will mold,
producing foul conditions which are unsuitable for termites. It
is best to sprinkle a little water daily, or as necessary, onto the top
paper to maintain a slightly moist condition. Check frequently to
determine the moisture condition.
Food: Pieces of untreated,
rotting wood may be added.
