Bird ResearchI began my own graduate work studying mating systems and sexual selection, and those topics continue to be a central theme of avian research in my lab. In the past decade this work has benefited greatly from the application of DNA-based genetic markers, in particular to determine paternity. Other topics of interest include using nest defense to test predictions from life history theory, and to learn more about interactions with predators, and a variety of other aspects of reproductive behavior and ecology. More applied problems such as determining the ecological factors underlying blackbird damage to corn crops, band recovery biases in waterfowl, and acid rain effects on common goldeneye have also been investigated. Geographically, the studies have ranged from the arctic to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. |
