WHAT CAN I DO WITH AN INTEGRATIVE BIOLOGY DEGREE?

A major in Integrative Biology (IB) provides course work in genetics, evolution, anatomy, physiology, ecology, animal behavior and molecular biology in addition to a solid foundation in math, chemistry and physics.

Students enrolled in the IB major participate in many extracurricular activities that serve to enrich their academic requirements and to prepare them for life after college.  Many students choose to include other learning opportunities like undergraduate research and internships in their academic plans. Volunteering in campus and community sites and leadership in student clubs are highly recommended.  Additionally, there are many opportunities to study in other countries while enrolled as an undergraduate at the University.  The Study Abroad Office offers many sites for students to choose from, including the Organization for Tropical Studies that sends students to South Africa and Costa Rica and Denmark’s International Study Program that includes programs in marine biology, ecology, molecular biology and genetics.

Students who complete degree requirements can expect to be prepared to enter graduate school in one of many life science areas, a professional school like medical school, dental school or law school or they can begin a career in business.  For students continuing their formal education in a life sciences graduate program, they will pursue an advanced degree, often including research in a laboratory or doing field work.   Options include working toward an M.S., PhD, or a joint degree like an MD/PhD or MD/JD.

For students who earn their B.S. degree and choose to become gainfully employed after graduation, there are many options from which to choose.  Teaching of Biology to junior and senior high school students, a wide array of jobs in the public and private sectors of industry and employment with state and federal governmental agencies are some of the areas that many of our graduates currently work.
