INTERNSHIPS for Integrative Biology Students
Internship: “It’s just a word!” An internship is any job – paid or unpaid – that will enhance your resume and career opportunities. Think outside the box – i.e., even though your major is Integrative Biology, you can look for internships in other areas, majors, or colleges.
STEPS to getting your Internship
Find an internship using the internet, referrals from faculty, TA’s, lab instructors, an IB advisor or other students. Internship opportunities are posted on the bulletin boards outside the IB advising office (127 Burrill) and also in the IB SPOTLIGHT (e-newsletter).
- Attend IB’s “Enrich Your Resume” Workshops held on Tuesdays at 4:00PM.
- Search for several internships.

- web-sites of specific organizations
- FMRI binders in the Med Scholars Program Office on the first floor of the Medical Sciences Bldg; UIUC Career Center.
- Apply to several. Pay attention to application deadlines (deadlines for most summer internships are mid Feb.).
- Write your application essay and/or cover letter.
RESOURCES: Writers Workshops, UIUC Career Center, Integrative Biology academic advisors. Have an advisor, professor, or TA critique it.
- Follow-Up via phone or e-mail after applying for the internship to make sure that your application materials were received and were complete.
- Prepare for interview.

- Write (pen and paper, not e-mail) a thank you note following your interview.
- Notify the IB Advising Office of your internship acceptance! We pass on your successful job/internships to the next group of students.
