  • Assistant Professor of Plant Systems Modeling, School of Integrative Biology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

We seek an outstanding early career scientist with a background in mathematical modeling of plant biological systems for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the Department of Plant Biology. Exceptional candidates at the associate or full professor level may be considered. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in plant sciences or related field and experience in mathematical modeling of biological systems. The ideal candidate would be a plant scientist with background in design of mechanistic models for forecasting plant productivity and research interest in plants as biofuel feedstocks. The successful candidate would be expected to be an integral part of the Energy Biosciences Institute and would receive funding to develop ~50% of their research effort within the Institute’s mission with a focus on the development of new models and approaches to forecast productivity of lignocellulosic feedstocks globally. The candidate must also develop an externally funded research program to model plant systems, which could range from the molecular to the ecosystem level.

The successful candidate would become part of a dynamic and well-established biology and agriculture faculty, as well as a broadly based genomics community. The position involves both graduate and undergraduate instruction including participation in the development of new bioenergy curriculum. The proposed starting date is August 16, 2008. Salary is commensurate with qualification. Minorities, women, and other designated groups are encouraged to apply.

To ensure full consideration, applicants should submit a CV, a statement of research and teaching interests, and the names and contact information of three references no later than January 11, 2008. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. Please send application materials, including email address, to the Plant Systems Modeling Search Committee, School of Integrative Biology, University of Illinois, 286 Morrill Hall, 505 South Goodwin Ave., Urbana, IL 61801 (phone: 217/ 333-3044; fax: 217/ 244-1224; email: sib@life.uiuc.edu).

Graduate Student Opportunities

  •  School of Integrative Biology Enhancement Fund. Through the generous annual gifts of alumni and friends to the SIB Enhancement Fund, the School of Integrative Biology is able to help defray costs for graduate students in SIB Departments and Programs who are participating in off-campus activities such as conferences, workshops, or specialized courses. Can be applied for any time of the year. For additional details.

  • ROBERT EMERSON MEMORIAL GRANT. This award is given in honor of Dr. Emerson, a former professor in the Department of Botany. He was a distinguished and decicated scientis of international stature in the field of photosynthesis. The grant will be awarded to outstanding graduate student(s) in Integrative Biology as judged by the IB Fellowship Committee. The award is intended to recognize outstanding academic achievement and research potential. The amount of the award is $3,250. For additional details.

  • FRANCIS M. AND HARLIE M. CLARK RESEARCH SUPPORT GRANTS. These grants are funded by a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Clark and are awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement in the biological sciences by graduate students. In recent years, grants have been awarded primarily for expenses relating to presentation of papers at international and national meetings, short specialty courses offered off campus, and conducting research or making collections away from campus. For additional details.

  • FRANCIS M. AND HARLIE M. CLARK SUMMER GRANTS. These grants are also funded by a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Clark and are awarded by the IB Fellowship Committee. These grants are to provide summer support to one or two continuing graduate students who would not otherwise have summer support. The stipend for each of these awards will be $2,500.
